Home video is great. But nothing compares to a theater or drive-in. A home theater or movies on the lawn can come close. And both can be done on a budget. Simply assess your current situation and set a budget for your project.
How much $$$ do you have to work with?
What are your long and short term goals?
Where will your home theater be located?

You have a TV and DVD player now. Add surround sound with a speaker set. I started with a $100 home theater in a box. Big screen TVs and projectors would be great. But you start small and upgrade your equipment as your budget allows.
Dedicated home theaters are ideal. But I have always used my living room. An interior room or basements work best because light & noise are less of an issue. But blinds and drapes can be used. Just start small and build an experience for your family.
We love the old drive-in experience. So movies on the lawn is my goal. Design a home theater for your family. Be creative. You can enjoy movies from your deck, swimming pool, camp site or even your boat. Don't all of these sound fun?

Nothing compliments a movie better than a favorite snack and drink. So you need a snack bar complete that home theater feel. This, too, can be done a budget. Remember that light and noise are issues when you choose a location.
What are your families preferred snacks?
How and where will they be prepared?
First, decide on your snacks. Second, decide how and where to prepare them. Lastly, choose equipment needed to meet this goal. This could be a dorm fridge and microwave or an entire bar with all of the toys. I serve cold drinks and popcorn.
We use a microwave and dorm fridge. So our equipment needs are minimal. My goal is to add an authentic popcorn popper. Sometimes we order a pizza. You may have more lofty needs and goals for your family.
